Mongolia – wonderful country
Mongolia is located in east-central Asia between China and Russia. It is the world’s largest landlocked nation. Its area is 1,565,000 square kilometers. It borders Russia, China, Kazakhstan.
Mongolia has two climatic zones: the continental zone in the north, and the desert in the south.
Mongolia is famous for its useful and beautiful grasslands. The steppe regions, historically occupied by nomadic herders, are covered with many varieties of grasses. 10 percent of Mongolia has forest and woodland cover. The major agricultural products are wheat, potatoes, oats, and barley.
Nayramadlïn Orgil, also called Huyten Orgil or Mount Huyten is the highest point on mainland (4,374 meters).
Hoh Nuur Depression is the lowest point (518 meters).
Uvs Lake, a saltwater lake, is the largest lake with a surface area of 3,366 square kilometers.
The Orhon is the longest river (1,126 kilometers).
The great Gobi Desert occupies one-third of Mongolia. It is the world’s largest cold-climate desert.
The population density of Mongolia is one of the lowest in world.
Ulaanbaatar is the capital of the country. It is the coldest capital in the world. Ulaanbaatar, in Mongolian, means “Red Bogatyr”. This name was given to the capital in 1924.
The ancestors of modern people settled the territory of modern Mongolia about 85 thousand years before our era.
Genghis Khan managed to create the world’s largest empire. It occupied 22% of the entire territory of our planet! For 25 years Genghis Khan managed to conquer more lands and peoples than the soldiers of the Roman Empire for 400 years.
Nobody knows where Genghis Khan was buried. In Mongolia, there is a legend according to which eight hundred soldiers killed several thousand people who attended the funeral of the greatest of the Mongol rulers. Then the soldiers committed suicide so that no one could disclose the secret.
The largest statue of a horseman in the world is near the capital. This is a monument to Genghis Khan. The monument is so large that there is an observation deck on the horse’s head. The height of the statue of the great conqueror is 40 meters, not including a ten-meter pedestal.
