A canyon is a narrow, deep valley cut by a river through rock. They vary in size from narrow slits to huge trenches. Canyons may be thousands of feet deep. Canyon formation is common in arid and semi-arid climates because bedrock weathers slowly in the absence of water. The largest and most famous canyons have been cut through dry areas by swift streams fed by rain or melting snow from wetter areas.
Submarine canyons are deep underwater valleys.
The Grand Bahama Canyon, in the Atlantic Ocean near the Bahamas, is thought to be the deepest submarine canyon. Its walls are nearly 5 kilometers tall.
Over many years, Deer Creek has cut through rock to create a beautiful canyon in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.

Sharyn Canyon in Kazakhstan stretches for 154 kilometers along the Sharyn River. It is located 195 km east of Almaty, near the Chinese border. The relict species of Ash Tree – Sogdian ash grows there. There is a whole grove survived the Ice Age.
Waimea in Hawaii has formed as a result of heavy rains and the ensuing spill of the Waimea River, which washed canyon through Mount Waialeale. Waimea is the biggest one on the territory of the Pacific. It is often called the Grand Canyon in miniature.

Colca Canyon (Peru) is located in the Andes mountain range. It is the deepest canyon in the world – 4160 meters. This canyon is 2 times more in depth than the Grand Canyon.
Blyde River Canyon (Africa, South Africa) was formed through the efforts of the same river, which over millions of years broke through the red sandstone gorge. Its length is 26 kilometers, and the depth is about 1,400 meters. Now the walls of this colorful canyon are vast sandy cliffs with a conical roof, similar to the giant African traditional huts.
There are many impressive creations of nature in the USA. Since 1979 amazingly beautiful Grand Canyon is included in the UNESCO list. Each year, the valley is visited by over 4 million people. Antelope Canyon attracts with its uniqueness and is also located in Arizona (USA). Such exotic name it received due to rusty red hues of the walls, strongly resemble the colors of animal skin.
