Green predators – carnivorous plants

Green predators - carnivorous plants

Green predators – carnivorous plants

The first flowering plants blossomed in the midst of the era of the dinosaurs – 140 million years ago. Probably you think that plants are delicate and harmless. But there are different plants that feed on insects, and each one seems to be as clever and as cruel as any animal that goes hunting for its food. Carnivorous plants have the subject of some captivating tales of science fiction, involving fantastic trees that consume large, unwary creatures in tropical forests. Most carnivorous plants grow in acidic bogs, unproductive lakes, or sandy soils. These are all habitats that are poor in the nutrients that plants require for growth. Most species of carnivorous plants are rare, and many are endangered.

Venus’s-flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) grows in certain parts of North and South Carolina. This plant is the most business-like insect eater of all. When a fly touches the hairs that grow along the leaf, the plant snaps it shut like a trap. After the fly is digested by juices in the plant, it opens up again.

The Bermuda Triangle

Bermuda Triangle

Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle, also known as Devil’s Triangle. It is one of the strangest and most mysterious places on our planet. A lot of planes, ships and helicopters disappeared in this area. They just seem to vanish into the air.
In 1492 when Christopher Columbus made his famous voyage to the New World he wrote in his log that his compass acted very strangely. He and his crew were confused by shallow areas of sea with no land nearby.
The Bermuda Triangle lies in the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico and is about 1.3 million square kilometers in size.
It is notorious for gobbling up ships. American naval ship Cyclops was of the most famous ships which disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. In March, 1918, during World War I, it set sail from Bermuda and was never seen again. The Cyclops vanished without a trace, taking with it 306 crew members.

Volcanoes – thermostat of the planet

Volcanoes - thermostat of the planet

Volcanoes – thermostat of the planet

Deep under the Earth’s surface it’s so hot that even rock melts. Molten rock is called magma. Magma released from a volcano is known as lava. Fresh lava ranges from 1,300° to 2,200° F (700° to 1,200° C) in temperature. As it cools, it hardens into rock. Because of the wind, volcanic ash can coat the land for miles around the volcano. Some volcanoes release clouds of poisonous gas or huge clouds of ash.
They have been called the thermostat of the planet.
Many haven’t erupted in years and have cooled off, and they are called “dead volcanoes.”
There are “sleeping volcanoes” which may “wake up” someday and start erupting. For example, Mount Vesuvius in Italy slept for a thousand years and in AD 79 it suddenly woke up. Its hot lava buried the city of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Some volcanoes help provide heat and energy. Many Icelandic homes get their hot water from springs heated by volcanic steam.

Valentin works in the publishing department of the Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He publishes scientific literature and photography is his hobby. Valentin became interested in photography at school. It was in the 1990s. He photographed nature, friends, classmates. At that time there were no digital cameras, so he had to print photos. At that time he was seriously interested in landscape photography and even today he likes taking photos of northern nature to show people its beauty.

Mysterious Crop Circles

Mysterious Crop Circles

Mysterious Crop Circles

In August 1980, farmer John Scull was surprised to find a circle eighteen metres across in one of his fields in Wiltshire.
This was the first of the now famous ‘crop circles’ of the 1980s. Since then 10,000 more crop circles have appeared from Japan and China to the United States and Brazil, however, about 90% of all circles appear in England in Wiltshire.
Although the shapes began as ordinary circles, over the years they have become more and more interesting. To draw some of them, you need to do difficult mathematics. They are also very large: the biggest are about 300 metres across. Scientists who have studied the circles say that some of them are perhaps made by the weather, by a special kind of storm. We know that they have appeared since the seventeenth century — when people believed they were made by magic. Some people still think that they are made by magic, or by visitors from another planet flying above the fields!
