Blind Artist – Lisa Fittipaldi

Lisa Fittipaldi is an artist and author. She is from Austin, Texas.
Lisa’s cheerful and colorful pictures are loved by the audience. But when people find out that the artist is blind, they are amazed and even shocked.
Lisa lost her vision in 1993. “I lost not only vision, but also the independence, and the meaning of life,” she said. Of course Lisa was depressed. It’s incredibly difficult to become totally dependent on others if you were strong and independent before. At first it may seem that a person has lost the meaning of life together with his ability.
Lisa tried to work in the garden, play the piano. But she was so depressed that often didn’t even get out of bed.
One day her husband Al brought home children’s watercolor paints and said, “I do not care what you are going to do with them. But do anything…”

To everyone’s surprise, Lisa took a brush and started painting.
“That day I woke up as if from hibernation – says Lisa. – I’ve never painted before, but decided to try. The more I drew, the more I liked it. Soon I realized that I had found my calling in life.”
So in 1995 she began to paint trying to find her place in the world. When she could see the world around her Lisa wasn’t interested in painting and did not have time to visit galleries. But the woman tried to do her best. She listened to audio books on art, visited museums with her husband.
Her pictures are exhibited in museums and galleries all over the world. The owner of the gallery in Austin, who became her manager, proudly says that most of Lisa’s pictures are sold out.
Lisa Fittipaldi has proved once again that blindness isn’t the end of life.
In 1999 Lisa founded the Mind’s Eye Foundation, a non-profit organization which provides adaptive computer technology to blind, vision-impaired and hearing-impaired children.
In 2005 Lisa moved to South America to undergo a series of surgeries to partially restore her vision. The surgeries were successful. After several years in South America she returned home and decided to try herself as an author. Her books have been published in German, Spanish and Turkish as well as English. In her book “A Brush with Darkness” the artist describes how she learned to draw being blind.
